Physical chemistry? Does anyone know about a good physical chemistry study guide? I'm taking this class this semester, and I need some extra help. I've heard abouth the Schaum's study guide, but some say it's kind of confusing.
For Those Who have taken Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry in College, which is harder? I have just taken my Organic Chemistry Final Exam. After two semesters of organic chemistry, I have to say this is the hardest class I have taken because of the volume of information that I have to memorize. I have already scheduled Physical Chemistry for the fall semester, and I am asking those who have taken both Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry in college. Which is harder, and...how much harder is it than the other? Should the blood the sweat I poured into Organic Chemistry help me in Physical Chemistry?, or will I be in for a rude awakening?
(unrelated question) How do you read on chemistry and other physical science? I think I read rather slow beacuse of my attention span and bad short term memory. How can I get better at reading? How can I read faster but at the same time remember more? Im not going to do anything this summer and I want to take sometime to read a whole general chemistry book, to refresh my memory on old basic stuff and learn new stuff(hopefully prepare for physical chemistry: thermodynamics and advance inorganic chemistry for next semester). But I suck at reading?!?
I am taking physical chemistry and we are using partial derivatives, I have never solved partials and need? a little help. The problem reads: p=RT/V + (a+bT)/V^2 a and b are constants. Find (dV/dT) holding p constant. dV/dT is a partial derivative. It is a physical chemistry problem where we are looking at volume with respect to temperature while holding pressure constant. I attempted to isolate v, however I could not. Explanation would be helpful because I need to understand the process so I can repeat it in the future. Thanks in advance.
what should i take first physical chemistry or biochem at ucla? i am a transfer student. i start ucla in fall 08. I have taken calc three and differential equations already. I have also completed organic chemistry. i am pursuing a b.s. in chemistry. which course would be better for me to take first at ucla in my first quarter, biochem or physical chemistry i have all of the necessary pre reqs for both courses
Whay are all organic, inorganic and physical chemistry textbooks wrong? All organic, inorganic and physical chemistry textbooks (that I have gotten my hands on) have been wrong about orbital theory. Valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory includes the hybridization rules we all learned (sp^3 hybrids, etc), but they don't exist. Worse, no textbooks give a disclaimer that VSEPR theory is a simplification that help visualize and solve problems, but hybrids don't exist in nature. If you study carbon-carbon bonds (i.e., photoemission spectroscopy) you will clearly resolve separate p and s orbitals for carbon; you won't see a mix like reasoned in hybridization theory. So why do we still teach this? VSEPR came about in the late 50s, and this contradiction has been know about since the late 60s, but every textbook remains wrong. Why?
How hard is Physical Chemistry? I need to complete it for minor in chem and I don't know if it will be too difficult. I am not able to take calc and physical chem at the same time and I would like to know if the equations will be too complex.
Physical chemistry or organic chemistry? I'm only in highschool, though I''m doing the IB Higher Level chem course which is considerably more intensive than regular chme. I have the option of choosing an elective subject in my chem class. Either organic chemistry or further physical chemistry. We've already done a fair bit of both last year. But now we have to choose. It'll mostly be energetics and kinetics for p-chem and reactions for o-chem. My question doesn't really have to relate to my current situation. I was just wondering in university, which of the two do you consider to be harder? Would someone who majors in biochem have to do p-chem? I know that o-chem is absolutely necessary for biochem.
Physical Chemistry Volume Change Liquid to Solid? My question is 250 g of water at 20 C is cooled to -10 C . What is the volume change? I have the density of water at 20 C, p=.9982 g/cm^3 and at 0 C, p=.915 g/cm^3, but not for -10 C. I know how get the volume using density but how do I find out volume for -10 C?
Links between gym (health and physical education) and chemistry? I'm writing a cross-curricular essay for Chemistry class that has to link with one of the other subjects I'm taking. I'm doing it for gym class, but I don't know how to link the two of them. I need at least three examples that show how the two classes link. The thesis is supposed to be in the form: "Chemistry and Health and Physical Education are two related disciplines, and this connectedness can be shown through (three examples.)" Can one be very kind and help me out with this, and make my life a little easier?
Physical chemistry: spawn of satan or not that bad? Ok, basically I have a choice between a BA in chemistry and a BA in biology. I need to stress that I will /not/ use the degree regardless as I plan to apply to medical school and they could care less what your degree is in. That being said, I like both biology and chemistry, yet I am hesitant to commit to chemistry since at UC Davis (where I plan to transfer), and im sure elsewhere, you're required to take a full year of physical chem as part of the degree requirements. I hear that it is obviously very heavy in physics and is extremely hard. So my question is to those who are chemist majors who preferably have already taken one or more physical chem classes: Is it really that bad or not? As much description of pchem as you want will be much appreciated, however, keep in mind that I'm just finishing gen chem 1 so I may not understand any terms you use that are specific to organic or physical chem. Thanks!
Online perfection but no physical chemistry when you met? Has anyone out there gotten super involved in an online/phone relationship but then had absolutely NO physical chemistry when you met? Has anyone had a really successful experience with someone they met online? Looking for a frame of reference, all answers will be appreciated!!
Good physical chemistry graduate school? What would be a good grad. school to get a PhD in physical chemistry in Canada? I noticed UofAlberta has physical chem and a separate program chemical physics, it seems like these guys focus on this area somewhat, and it's a pretty high ranked university, too. I have UofT here less than an hour away from me but somehow I don't want to go there. Also I'd like to know what are my chances as a Canadian student to get into an American university. Are the grades I get here considered to be equivalent to U.S. grades?

Physical Chemistry Notation? I just starting taking Honors Physical Chemistry and I am wondering what Psi* denotes. In class my professor plotted Psi* times Psi vs. x, but I must have missed what Psi* means. Thanks in advance. Psi here stands for the Greek letter, not pounds per square inch.
*Chemistry home work question* What is a chemical change and a physical change? Yea i still cant really tell the difference between a physical change and a chemical change.. Could someone give me more info about these 2 types of changes. I am in 12th grade chemistry. And i have a quiz on this tommorow which will be on examples of the 2 types of changes.. and i have to pick which change they are. So yea.. Please And Thank You
Surface chemistry or Physical Chemistry? My school gives us a choice to take either physical chemistry or surface chemistry. I've heard that physical chemistry is pretty difficult so I opted to take Surface chemistry instead. I'm not sure if this is better though. please help!!if you've taken either one..what do you think???

The balloons and the tank are allowed to return to room temperature. What is the change in internal energy overall, from before the balloons were inflated until they returned to their original temperature? c.) What quantity of heat will they absorb in returning to their original temp? If you could help me with this, I would definitely appreciate it
Is physical chemistry = physical attraction? I've dated a guy for about 2-3 weeks; he seemed rather interested in me (approached me initially and was very enthusiastic). Suddenly he broke off, saying that he was attracted to me, but as time passed, he realized he did not feel physical chemistry between us. I am confused: does he mean he did not find me physically attractive, or something else is the matter?
physical chemistry? how physical is physical chemistry? I am considering studying it but it still takes me almost 30 min to run 3 miles.

B)Evaluate (no calculations) the sign for the change in entropy for the final equation. C)Considering your answers to parts b. and c., will the reaction be spontaneous?
Physical chemistry problem? The vapour pressure of a volatile liquid can be measured by saturating a gas by flowing it slowly through the liquid and measuring the weight loss of the liquid. In such an experiment 5L of dry nitrogen at 760 torr was passed slowly through geraniol oil, which has a molar mass of 154.2g/mol. The temperature was held constant at 110 Degrees celcius. The mass loss of the oil was 0.32g. Calculate the vapour pressure of geraniol oil at 110 degrees celcius. Basically i can't find a relevant equation to help solve this problem, and there is no mark scheme for me to find a solution unfortunately! Would appreciate any help with this problem, its driving me insane! Thanks so much, i think maybe i was looking to overcomplicate the problem. Just one more thing, the answer i got, 1.29Kpa, does that sound reasonable?
Physical Chemistry Help? Unfortunately, most of the energy released from the combustion of gasoline is lost as heat. It is only the energy converted to work that moves your vehicle. Consider the following data: # of moles of octane used, Amount of heat released 1.3 , 4600 kJ 6.8 , 24060 kJ 24.4 , 86340 kJ 31.9 , 112880 kJ A) On your own paper create a graph of heat released vs. moles with a line of best fit. Calculate the slope of your line. What does it tell you? B) What percentage of the total amount of energy (5055 kJ/mol) is being released as heat? What % is being converted to work? C) A small home requires about 35,000 kJ of heat to stay warm on a cold day. If a car uses 45.0 gallons of gasoline, how many days could the house stay warm from it if it could use all the wasted heat? We will assume for now that gasoline is pure octane. (Density of gasoline/octane is 0.702 g/mL; 1 gallon = 3.7854 L; mw C8H18 = 114.26 g/mol)

Physical Chemistry Question? Prove that wavefunctions Psi_1 (quantum number n =1) and Psi_2 (quantum number n = 2) for a particle in a one-dimensional box are orthogonal to each other. This proof requires some clever integration. Using the fact that a value of a definite integral corresponds to the area under the graph is the simplest way how to do this, but there are other ways as well.
Physical Chemistry Question, please help me..? A cloud mass moving across the ocean at an altitude of 2000m encounters a coastal mountain range. As it rises to a height of 3500m to pass over the mountains, it undergoes an adiabatic expansion. The pressure at 2000 and 3500m is 0.802 and 0.602 atm, respectively. If the initial temperature of the cloud mass is 288 K,what is the cloud temperature as it passes over the mountains? Assume that Cp,m for air is 28.86 JK^-1 mol^-1 and that air obeys the ideal gas law. If you are on the mountain, should you expect rain or snow?
